Diamond Carat Guide by Gemone Diamonds

What is Diamond Carat/Carat Weight

Well, carat weight is the easiest to understand among the 4C’s. The Carat is the measurement unit of the diamond. And it is further subdivided into 00 equal parts called “points”. One point equals .01 Ct or 1/100 Ct. 1 Carat diamond equals 100 points. We can write carat weight in decimal numbers. But it is often expressed infractions that are easy to understand. Diamond weight fractions are approximate and refer to ranges of weight. This chart from The Diamond Council of America® is a handy reference:

Diamond prices increase with Carat weight because big diamonds are desirable and rare. But two diamonds of equal weight can have different values. Depending upon its three other factors: Color, Clarity, and Cut. In jewelry pieces with more than one diamond, the Carats are described in terms of total Carat weight (T.W.). This is the combined total weight of all the diamonds in the piece.
Determining the right Carat weight for you depends on your budget and taste.

Why is carat weight important?

When shopping for any kind of Loose Diamond or Diamond Jewelry, carat weight is the most crucial factor to look after as it affects the price as well as the appearance of a diamond. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams, here when it comes to the cost of the diamond the weight is been considered first as the heavier and bigger the diamond, the more costly it would be. The larger diamond provides the most elegant and adorable look when compared to small diamonds, the other point to be noted is that big diamonds are more durable as they have higher density and are likely to break or chip under any pressure.

Expert tip:

Minor differences in carat weight can have a disproportionate impact on the cost. For example, two diamonds can look nearly identical, but one will cost several hundred dollars more even if it differs by 0.1 carat. It can help to put the diamond you want side-by-side with one that’s 10 or 15 points less, to see that there isn’t as much of a difference as you thought – and it can save you thousands of dollars.

This printout illustrates how diamonds of different Carat weights will appear from the top.

Your diamond may differ from the printout in length/width ratio, table, and depth.

As the name suggests, Carat weight refers to a diamond’s weight. Diamonds Carat weight may not reflects the exact size of the diamond. It's the same as how a human's weight is never compared with its height.  To gain a precise understanding of the diamond size,

Gemone Diamonds recommends considering Carat weight with two other characteristics:

  1. The distance across the top of the diamond was measured in millimeters.

  2. And the diamond’s cut grade.

It is important to measure the distance across the top of the diamond as this is how we view a stone when set into a ring. Diamond cut is also taken into consideration. Because when the diamond cut is proper in proportion it reflects more amount of light from the top. Thus, when a diamond is well cut, the light reflected out of the top makes it appear larger.

Also, much of the weight of the cut diamond is hidden in the base of the diamond. Making the diamond look smaller than its actual Carat weight would imply. It is thus possible to have the diamond of a lower Carat weight but higher cut grade. That appears larger than a diamond with a larger Carat weight, but poor cut.

Once you are sure of your Cut, Color, and Clarity grade it will become easy for you to choose your diamond. Much as there are 100 pennies in a dollar, a Carat Diamond compromises 100 points. Hence, 50 points are equal to 1/2-carat, and so on.

What is the difference between a carat and the size of a diamond?

In addition to their duties, they are measured in numerous ways. A diamond's weight, or carat, is what determines its price. Conversely, size is the millimeter-based measurement of various dimensions. Size and weight have diverse functions even though they are significantly influenced, correlated, and affected by one another.

In other words, each symbolizes a different attribute of a diamond, and each is determined by a different set of factors. The depth of a diamond, which is invisible from above, establishes how many carat weights it has. Conversely, a larger diamond size is produced from the top when the diameter is greater in millimeters. For instance, the diameters of two diamonds with equivalent weights may differ.

Which Carat Weight Is Right For Me?

  1. To choose the best Carat weight, consider the size of the finger, the size of your setting, and your budget.

  2. Are you looking for a Large Carat weight diamond? and Is it still not fitting into your budget? Then you must consider a diamond with a good cut and SI1-SI2 clarity and an I or J Color grade.

  3. Diamond prices jump at the full and Half-Carat weights. Diamonds below this weight cost less. Small size differences are impossible to detect. The distribution of Carat weight is the entire diamond. Check here 1ct Diamond price

  4. Keep in mind that the smaller the finger, the larger the diamond will appear. A 1.5-carat diamond solitaire looks much larger on a size 4 finger than a size 8.
